The forecast for Thursday, May 24, 2012
All eyes are on the tropics as an elongated area of low pressure begins influencing Central Florida. This area is not well-defined, and upper levels winds are preventing any tropical formation. However, with this system in close proximity to Central Florida, it will impact our weather pattern through the upcoming holiday weekend.
This morning, a few light showers may move ashore. Otherwise, expect strong, onshore winds to begin increasing moisture and rain chances later today. Northeast winds will be sustained up to 20 mph, keeping the coastline cooler than inland locations. Expect highs to reach the mid-80s at the coast, but lower 90s inland.
Tonight, many locations quiet down after sunset. Persistent, onshore winds will keep an isolated shower in the forecast for the coastline overnight. Elsewhere, partly cloudy skies are in place. Low temperatures will be mild and muggy, in the low to mid-70s.
Tomorrow, as the area of low pressure moves east of the Florida Peninsula, it takes most of the moisture with it. Strong, onshore winds will still bring a few showers ashore starting in the morning. A weak sea breeze and heating of the day will be the focus for isolated convection during the afternoon hours. High temperatures will reach the mid- to upper 80s along the coast, with lower 90s inland.
Much of the same is expected Saturday. Partly sunny skies and breezy, onshore winds are on tap. Afternoon convection will be limited, with sea-breeze collisions the main focus for storms.
By Sunday, the low pressure system in the Atlantic begins retrograding back westward toward the state. This will enhance moisture once again. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are more likely at this point in time. As the system continues westward across the state, rain chances remain higher through the Memorial Day holiday.
