The forecast for Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012
High pressure is building in over the southern states from the north and resulted in a big increase in onshore winds on Friday afternoon. The easterly flow along with an old frontal boundary that was washing out over the state made for a cloudy day, but was unable to generate much more than one or two coastal showers. Overall, there is not a great deal of hope for much more rain this weekend and it appears as if we will have to wait until the approach of next weeks storm system before we should expect any significant rainfall.
Overnight will be unseasonably warm, breezy and cloudy with winds only weakening slowly later this morning. The clouds and the breeze will both help to hold overnight lows up in the upper 50s and lower to middle 60s. Winds will be breezy from the east and then southeast again today with a fair amount of cloud cover over the area and the opportunity for one or two Atlantic showers to form that may impact the coastal counties.
Highs on today will still be above normal for this time of year, but with the clouds, we will only see highs in the middle to upper 70s. Winds will turn south ahead of the next storm system to move out of the plains on Sunday and that will lessen the onshore flow and allow us to warm back up into the upper 70s and middle 80s. The southerly component of the wind on Sunday will also lessen the threat for Atlantic showers to make it to shore, but the warm and moist southerly flow may promote a slight chance for rain over the interior. A new front will move into the area on Monday and will keep a slight chance for rain in the forecast for the rest of the week. .
We will look forward to this next storms system making slow progress out of the southern Plains on Monday and Tuesday, which should keep a chance for showers in the forecast most of next week. With plenty of wind this weekend, hazardous boating conditions will be expected on the Atlantic and large inland waterways and lakes.
