ORLANDO -- A line of fast-moving storms came through Central Florida Wednesday afternoon, with some areas seeing heavy winds.
It was brief, but the winds caused some damage in the southern part of Brevard County.
In Melbourne, a 50-foot tree on city property toppled when strong wind gusts came through. It landed on John Madden's backyard fire pit and shattered, parts damaging his garden and bending two fences.
Madden said he called the city twice in the past, but never got a response.
“It took out all the power. It took out all the TV, the telephone. I called the city twice on this already and they never did come out. Well they came out today,” Madden said.
Meanwhile, eight miles away in Palm Bay, work was progressing on the site of a new gas station and retail shops.
The foreman said a strong gust of wind whipped out of nowhere, knocking down 80 feet of a concrete block wall.
Dozens of the heavy blocks toppled to the ground, and parts of the building’s shell were also damaged.
