PORT ORANGE -- A high school student is facing serious charges, in addition to possibly being expelled from school, for bringing a gun on campus.
The mother of a ninth grade Atlantic High School student called the school's resource officer to alert them a weapon was missing and they should check her son's book bags.
They did, and found a .380 automatic weapon, a small amount of marijuana, four cell phones, pliers and a screwdriver.
The 15-year-old was arrested and taken to the Volusia Juvenile Detention Center.
"It's crazy, I mean, scary going to school. Then all of a sudden somebody's like ‘hey, somebody brought a gun to school,’" said Jessica Mayor, an Atlantic High student.
School officials said because the student was arrested before the first school bell rang, the school was not put on lockdown and the incident did not disrupt the campus.
The teen was charged with possession of a weapon on campus and possession of marijuana.
He could also face expulsion of no less than a year.
