Vera NeSmith, 91, cannot drive anymore, but said she has gotten back her independence because of volunteer drivers from the Independent Transportation Network of Orlando.
"If I want to go shopping, I can go shopping. If I want to get my hair done, I can do it," NeSmith said.
Tom Porter, executive director of ITN Orlando, said he is trying to recruit more volunteers.
All of ITN's drivers are volunteers, and the 52 signed up now is not enough.
Just a chunk of Orange County has been getting this service, so if you live in the far eastern part of the county, volunteers cannot get to you -- at least, not yet.
"We see a time where we've got a network all across the state of Florida, all across the country, where a senior can get a ride any time they want one," Porter said.
While ITN Orlando does not serve all of Orange County, it has enough manpower to serve Orlando, Maitland and Winter Park, as well as Altamonte Springs, Casselberry and Longwood, in Seminole County.
Porter said ITN provides rides to 250 people every day, 24/7, but he has gotten nearly 5,000 requests from people who have difficulty getting out of their homes.
The Independent Transportation Network reimburses its volunteers for gas money.
