Central Florida desperately needed rain to quench a long dry spell, but the showers arrived during the Friday morning rush.

What to expect today and tonight

The cold front clears the region Friday night, allowing northerly winds to slightly cool temperatures. Overnight lows will fall into the low to mid-50s in most locations. The coolest temperatures will be in Marion County, where lows will fall into the mid-40s.

Driving safely in wet weather

Rain can be especially dangerous during busy commute times, especially along the "Fairbanks Curve" on Interstate 4.

On that section of I-4 near Fairbanks Avenue, water tends to build up and send drivers spinning out of control.

Work to improve drainage along the Fairbanks Curve has yet to begin, leaving that area a serious threat every time it rains. That construction could begin in late February or sometime in March.

Of course, any road can be dangerous during wet weather. So here are some reminders for driving safely when it rains:

  • Slow down! It takes longer for your vehicle to adjust when the roads are wet.
  • Wipers on, lights on. Even during the day, it's the law. Your lights will help you see the road, and other drivers see you.
  • Don't follow larger vehicles too closely. The spray from the large tires reduces vision.
