A deadly cruise ship accident off the coast of Italy has prompted U.S. Rep. John Mica to call for a federal probe into American cruise lines, many of which are based in Florida.
Mica, R-Winter Park, who heads the House Transportation Committee, said he wants hearings on safety regulations for cruise lines.
Wednesday, the committee's Coast Guard subcommittee launched an investigation to review operating standards.
The Italian ship Costa Concordia, which is owned by Carnival Cruise Lines, struck a reef and capsized late Friday night.
At least 11 people were killed, and efforts to find 21 missing people, including two Americans, have been put on hold because of rough seas.
The captain reportedly said he tripped and fell into the water, and never intended to abandon his passengers. However, prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges against him, including manslaughter and abandoning ship.
Meanwhile, Mica said hearings on cruise safety could begin as early as February.
