Last Updated: Thursday, November 03, 2011 3:51 PM

The state of Florida now owns 61 miles of railroad track.

The deal between CSX and the state now means work can begin on the SunRail commuter train that will connect Volusia, Seminole, Orange and Osceola counties.

Thursday was the deadline for the $150 million deal between CSX and the Florida Department of Transportation.

“The transfer of the CSX rail corridor to the State of Florida marks a significant milestone in completing the SunRail project," said Congressman John Mica (FL-07).  "Today, the people of Florida acquired valuable rail right-of-way, which both makes SunRail possible and marks the beginning of actually turning dirt and putting people to work.”

Construction is expected to begin next month on the first phase of the rail will stretch 31 miles from DeBary to South Orange County by 2014.
