Discovery’s Final Flight
Space shuttle Discovery is now inside the confines of Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building following a move from its processing hangar this Thursday morning.
Wednesday’s scheduled rollover from Discovery’s hangar had to be postponed because of a water main break at the Kennedy Space Center.
The lack of water was judged a safety hazard, and operations were suspended.
The water main has been fixed, and they’ve rescheduled the rollover for Thursday.
Now inside the VAB, a metal sling will be carefully connected to the spacecraft and then operators will hoist it from transfer aisle to the high reaches of the 52-story building before lowering it into place beside the external fuel tank and twin solid rocket boosters.
NASA said the one-day delay should not impact the scheduled launch date of Nov. 1, Discovery’s last scheduled trip to space.
Again, you might want to check out the time-lapse video put together by NASA and the Smithsonian Air & Space magazine from Discovery’s previous flight in April. It covers about six-weeks of processing, from hangar to VAB, to launch pad, to launch in just under four minutes.
- Fascinating video, check it out here.
