The Federal Aviation Administration has been called in to investigate a deadly plane crash right in the middle of a busy Volusia County road.

The single-engine Cessna was taking off Saturday from the DeLand Municipal Airport when investigators say something went horribly wrong.

It crashed on U.S. 92, not far from the airport around 2:30 p.m.

One of the two men on board, Duane Swanson, did not survive.

The plane clipped a power line, somersaulted in the air and then crashed on its roof.

With a downed plane and power lines, sparks were flying dangerously near a pool of gasoline leaking from the plane.

Witnesses who rushed in to help say both men on board were in bad shape.

"We pulled the doors open, there's two guys hanging upside down from their seatbelts. And somebody said ‘Do you have a knife?’ And gas started pouring from the plane and I went and got my knife," said Tom Kromhout.

Kromhout used the knife to free the men from the seatbelts.  He and two others helped pull them out.

“There was gas all over the place. A guy came over here saying ‘get out of here get out of here. it's gonna blow it's gonna blow.’  But we already had him half out anyway.  So we couldn't give up.  We got him out.  But he was in pretty bad shape,” said Bob Bowling, witness.

Swanson, who is in his 90s, did not survive the crash.

The other man, Leonard Selover, who is in his 80s, was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in critical condition.

Swanson has reportedly had several strokes in the past.

He did have his pilot's license.  At his age, he'd have to be medically cleared to fly every two years.
