A day at the beach almost ended violently for a church group visiting New Smyrna Beach.
Two teenagers from the group were caught in a rip current, but are alive thanks to three heroes who jumped into the water near New Smyrna Beach to save them.
Officials said the first teen caught in the current is fine. The other teen needed CPR and was taken to Halifax, but members of her church group said she is improving.
"The current was ungodly, when I was swimming toward her it felt like I wasn't moving," Shay Bernstein, one of the rescuers, said.
Three men were cooling off in the water when one of them spotted the girls at 11 a.m. on Saturday. One of the teens was submerged underwater, while the other wasn't breathing.
"Her eyes were all glassy, no breathing, no movement, nothing," Bernstein said.
Officials said the rip currents have kept lifeguards busy all day long with over 100 rescues throughout Volusia County.
"I have two little girls myself and that's what I was thinking the whole time," Bernstein said. "I just hope some would do that for me if I couldn't be there."
Rip currents have been causing problems throughout the weekend for east coast beaches.
On Friday at about 8 p.m., a 19-year-old was spotted floating in the water in front of the Desert Inn. He was given CPR and taken to Halifax. Officials say he is still in serious condition and that alcohol was a factor.
There were 10 rescues in Brevard County on Saturday, according to lifeguards.
