The Lakewood-Gibbs high school football game was halted abruptly Friday night when gunshots rang out near the football field.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, someone started shooting near the school just after 10 p.m., sending the crowd and players running for cover.
Multiple shell casings were recovered near the field.
Authorities said they believe two groups of men got into an argument before someone fired shots into the air. The men left the scene before officers could find them. Officers did take one person into custody who they said was a witness to the shootings.
No injuries were reported. About 1,500 fans were in the stands at the time of the shootings.
Lakewood won the game 32-12, which was called off with five minutes remaining in the contest.
