A jury has ruled an Orlando mother, accused of starving her newborn daughter to death, is guilty of child neglect.
It took a jury about two hours Thursday to find Lauren Gress guilty and acquit her on a charge of aggravated manslaughter.
Gress' 4-month-old twins were severely malnourished and dehydrated. When her daughter died in November 2008, she was the same size as when she was 2 weeks old.
Her attorney Richard Hornsby said because of Florida's diminished capacity laws, he wasn't allowed to tell the jury two highly renowned doctors diagnosed Gress with severe postpartum depression.
"If the jury was able to know if she was diagnosed with specific condition, that she was suffering, that was affecting her ability to recognize that the children health was deteriorating, there's little doubt that that would have affected their verdict,” Hornsby said.
Her attorney said he'll fight that during the appeals process.
Gress is facing at least eight years in prison.
However, a judge could factor in the postpartum depression and show leniency.
Gress is scheduled for sentencing later this month.
