A major accident left one person dead and backed up traffic for hours in Brevard County Friday.

The accident happened on Interstate 95 just north of state Road 46.

Four helicopters, two cars, four wounded, hundreds of cars delayed and one person dead all because someone was speeding.

"We had some witnesses that passed the vehicle they estimated that the vehicle was traveling at between 85 and 90 miles an hour," said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Michael Brown.

Troopers said the entire incident started with the driver of a Range Rover heading southbound on I-95.

Traffic was slowing down because of an unrelated crash, but the driver of this car didn't notice until it was too late.

He swerved, traveled across the median and crashed head-on into a car heading in the opposite direction.

"I don't think that it’s the roadway," Lt. Brown said. "It’s the people driving. This time of year, there is a lot of traffic. People need to pay attention and look out for other vehicles."

There was major damage done to the two cars involved, but officials said even more damage was done to the people inside.

In all, emergency responders said they had to transport four people from the car that was hit head-on.

The driver of the Range Rover and his young child were unharmed. The woman in the Range Rover, though, was killed.

“I know that he was very remorseful. He was making statement to his wife, who was obviously dead at the scene, that he was apologetic and that he was sorry,” Lt. Brown said.

Authorities said the family in the Range Rover was from South Florida.

Troopers do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

Charges are pending against the driver.
