There's a battle brewing over what some Bay area children are learning in school.
A conservative blogger and education activist says a world history textbook used by high school students in Sarasota is inaccurate and wants it removed from the curriculum.
Religion in our public education system has always been a touchy subject.
In Sarasota, Dr. Richard Swier filed an appeal with the school board, arguing that a text book used since 2006 does not support what they call American values.
The "World History: Patterns of Interaction," which sells for almost $100 on Amazon.com is at the center of the classroom controversy.
Dr. Swier can be found blogging on Red County.com.
In a Skype interview, Dr. Swier told us his biggest concern about the textbook is "actually promoting one religion over another religion."
Well the textbook committee for Sarasota County Schools considered Dr. Swier's challenge and reviewed his claims.
"The committee studied the facts and felt the textbooks are historically accurate," said the school board's spokesperson Gary Leatherman. "It may be worth noting that 40 of the 67 school districts in Florida use this textbook."
Now, the calendar's set for an appeal during the school board meeting on Tuesday, July 20.
The school board will hear both sides of the argument.
The general public can participate.
Dr. Swier already told us what he wants as an outcome.
"Sort of a warning label, this textbook is flawed. Here's some supplemental material that you can use when you're in the classroom," said Dr. Swier. "And that way it will get them off the hook at least from this point on."
He conceded you can't get rid of the books for the upcoming school year because they're already on the book shelves.
By his opinion, that has to change in the future.
Dr. Swier said he wants a more thorough vetting of the textbooks and more parents involved in the textbook review committee.
The education activist had an unsuccessful run for the school board in 2002.
When asked if this was all a political ploy, Dr. Swier said he's not on any ballot and won't be in the near future.
