An old house in downtown is now all the buzz after a church planning to tear it down discovered a massive bee hive in the wall.
Richard Martynika, the entomologist from All Florida Bee Removal who is removing the bees, said the 500-pound hive was approximately 7 feet high with about 50,000 honey bees in it.
The home cannot be torn down until the hive is removed and the bees are killed.
Although in some areas bee populations are decreasing, that's not the case in Florida.
"We are concerned about our honey bee population,” Martynika said. “But what most people don't know, our honey bee population is exploding, largely because of the African or some called killer bee."
Martynika said about 10 percent of the population is allergic to bees, and if stung, it could be deadly for about 3 percent.
