Do you think the state money should be spent to study cases of wrongful convictions?
Florida Chief Justice Charles Canady issued an administrative order Friday, creating a Florida Innocence Commission to study the causes of wrongful convictions.
The commission will be headed by Orange County Judge Belvin Perry, the same judge presiding over the Casey Anthony murder case.
The panel was established in part because of the high profile cases of two Brevard County men -- William Dillon and Wilton Dedge.
Both were exonerated, after spending years in prison for crimes they did not commit.
"They railroaded my brother. They railroaded my brother," said David Dillon, William Dillon’s brother.
Dillon was 14 when his older brother William was convicted and hauled off to prison for murder.
William was there for 27 years and was released in November 2008 after a court ruled he was wrongly convicted.
"Could you imagine 27 years being locked and knowing you are innocent? You can't bring nothing back for Billy for what he lost," Dillon said.
William can't get back those years he lost, but some officials, including Canady, want to prevent cases like this one from every happening.
In two days at his new position, Canady created the commission.
The order explains how 23 officials will look at cases like Dillon's and figure out what led to the mistake of putting an innocent man behind bars. They’ll then develop proposals to avoid similar mistakes.
"After 27 years of not having your older brother around, it was the greatest feeling to have him released," Dillon said.
Currently, William Dillon is in Chicago recording and writing music about the 27 years spent in prison.
He gives speeches about his experience and is trying to turn a negative into a positive.
William told News 13 over the phone he is happy the commission was approved Friday, but feels it's long overdue.
"Christmas, Easters, Labor Days, Fourth of Julys, we missed all them, holidays with him," Dillon said.
Canady is also a former congressman from Lakeland.
