The investigation into former Florida GOP Chairman Jim Greer was expanding by the time he and friend Delmar Johnson spoke in March.
But according to audio recording released on Wednesday, Greer knew he was being investigated but was adamant he had done nothing wrong. What he did not know, however, was that Johnson, Republican Party's former executive director, was aiding officials.
A piece of the transcript read like this:
Greer: Nobody has done anything wrong.
Johnson: Yeah, exactly.
Greer: And these guys are just trying to destroy...well, I'm not even sure it's this much. I mean, it could be trying to die down, but my God, you are right - they just keep bringing it up.
Greer, 47, was arrested June 2 in his Seminole County home earlier this month and indicted on six felony counts of grand theft, money laundering and attempted fraud.
The FDLE had been investigating Greer after an audit found he awarded himself and his executive director a fundraising contract that paid them about $200,000.
Greer resigned under pressure in February after reports surfaced that he used party funds on ritzy hotels, gourmet restaurants and private jets.
He faces as much as 75 years in prison if convicted.
