On The Town: B-52's frontman also sings for local group, The Superions

The voice of the legendary group The B-52's is finding inspiration in Orlando. Frontman Fred Schneider met a few local guys - including a Full Sail grad – and formed a new group, The Superions.

Their songs often start with an electro track, and then that recognizable voice kicks in. It's not quite talking. It's not quite singing. It's Schneider, and the stuff he's writing these days is exciting fans, like Carolyn Hanratty.

"It is so ridiculous,” said Hanratty from Longwood.

But the music is “ridiculous” enough (in a good way) that she drove to downtown Orlando from Longwood to catch a glimpse of the new wave icon.

"I mean, Fred's a punk legend from the new wave days," said Noah Brodie.

I met Brodie and Dan Marshall at their home/recording studio in Winter Park. Brodie works at Universal. Marshall is a Full Sail grad. These guys met The B-52's frontman at the store Rock N' Roll Heaven.

Then, something happened.

"He heard some of the songs one night and decided that he wanted to track something," Brodie recalled.

"Unbelievable. I would never believe in a million years that that would happen," Marshall told me.

Schneider is writing songs like “Totally Nude Island” and “Who Threw That Ham At Me.” So where does he come up with this?

"It used to be I'd go in the bathroom because Mr. Bird made too much noise." Schneider added, “We like lounge and Tiki music. And we just give it a demented twist."

Coming from different backgrounds and eras, what have they learned from each other? Anything?

Schneider looks down. "Um. Just...."

Marshall squirms a bit. "Uh. That's a tough one. We'll have to cut that one."

Regardless, whatever they’re doing is working. Look for a Christmas album like no other by the end of this year.

Also, to find out what Cindy Wilson of The B-52's is up to, and who Brodie thinks Schneider has a crush on. Go to Channel 300, Central Florida on Demand, hit Entertainment, then click on Celeb Interviews.
