You have your canned food, water, and flashlights, but here are some things that should be in your hurricane kit that you may have overlooked.
"Make sure you have a first aid kit with enough supplies for small cuts and bruises," said Joel Hass, with the American Red Cross. "Be sure to have antiseptics and ointments. Remember to pack pain relievers, such as aspirin or Tylenol, and if you take prescription drugs, call your pharmacist to get enough medication to last at least two weeks."
If you have any prescriptions that need to be renewed, be sure to call your doctor before the storm strikes.
Another thing to keep in mind: Do not forget to guard the health of your pets, and have a safe place to take them.
Red Cross disaster shelters cannot accept pets, because of state's health and safety regulations and other considerations.
Just like you make a hurricane kit for yourself, your pet disaster supplies kit should include:
- Medications and medical records, stored in a waterproof container
- First aid kit
- Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and/or carriers to transport pets safely, and ensure that your animals cannot escape
- Current photos of your pets, in case they get lost
- Food, potable water, bowls, cat litter or pan
- Can opener
You may not be home when the evacuation order comes.
Find out if a trusted neighbor would be willing to take your pets and meet you at a prearranged location.
Planning and preparation for your health, as well as your family's, will help during the stress.
