What does the Keetch Byram Drought Index mean, and how is it calculated?
--Adam, Orlando
Adam, the index is a reference scale based on the amount of moisture available in the soil available for vegetation. The numbers increase each day we go without rain, even rising faster if the temperatures are warmer. Those numbers go down when we manage to get some rain.
