Why do we get about an hour more daylight than New York in the winter, but in the summer at its longest time of day it equals out?

Stu, during our winter months, the tilt of the earth limits the period of sun time the further north you head. There are some areas that see no sunshine for a few days. The opposite occurs during the summer with sunlight. While our sunlight periods change some, it isn't nearly as significant as regions further north.
