What is the origin in calling the new moon as such if there is technically no moon showing?

Angel, some areas refer to the "new moon" as the "dark moon." Either way, it's the beginning of a 29.5 day period that the object moves through. The change of look is because of the different amounts of the illuminated part of the moon facing us.
