Why is the moon so large in the sky as it rises above the horizon?

Manny, sometimes it is closer. The moon's orbit is not circular and the distance from the earth can change up to 13,000 miles in either direction from the mean distance. But usually the moon appears larger in our sky as the result of an optical illusion... much like during sunrise and sunset.
