What is a downburst?

Carol, powerful downdrafts within a thunderstorm can sometimes gust well above hurricane strength. These winds are referred to as downbursts, which can be made up of smaller elements called microbursts. Wind speeds above 120 mph aren't that uncommon, with some gusts reaching 150 mph or more.
