Can thunder occur without lightning?

Tom,
one can't take place without the other. Lightning is an "explosion" of electrical charges interacting as winds rising and falling help creates the friction between particles. That "explosion" is visual via the lightning; and the sound that explosion makes is the thunder that rumbles through the sky.
