If storm clouds are made of water, why are they dark when water is clear?

Linda, all clouds are made of droplets of water, which scatter the incoming sunlight. Thin cirrus clouds allow light to pass through relatively easy. Huge thunderstorm clouds that rise 50,000 feet cause serious scattering of incoming light, resulting in shadows and darkness below the clouds.
