ORLANDO -- Plans to build commuter rail are full speed ahead, according to local leaders.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the most crucial link is nearly in place. Federal dollars from Washington were officially secured when President Bush signed a bill Friday.
Planners presented a progress report Friday afternoon, showing designs for the stations and explaining that parcels of land have been secured for parking lots.
Of course, one more hurdle involves the state legislature, and whether or not they will hold a special session to discuss the debate over accident liability.
Mayor Dyer is confident the commuter rail will roll forward with or without a special session.
"Light rail is alive and well. We need to circle back and get that liability provision taken care of. But the bigger pieces, which are the funding pieces at the support of the federal government level are moving along very steadily," said Dyer.
Dyer added if the legislature doesn't hold a special session, the liability issue will likely come up in next year's session.
