The common dog collar has limited information if a pet gets separated from its owner.
Well, a professional surfer, who is also a dog lover has come up with a unique solution to the problem.
"I was really nervous. I thought that maybe somebody stole him and I had no idea where he was," said Mary Gilbert.
Another dog-lover, who feared losing his lovable pooch dreamed up a solution. Professional surfer Jonathan Warren came onto dry land long enough to invent the Pet Safe Micro I.D. Rescue Collar.
"It's a flash drive that plugs into a USB port and you access the information that the owner wants you to know," Warren said.
There are no real limitations to how much info you can put on the Micro I.D., unlike the traditional dog collar.
"You can put all your phone numbers, all your friend's phone numbers, all your photos on there, all your vet information, everything, you know," Warren said.
Whoever finds your pet just twists the Micro I.D. off the collar to reveal the USB drive, then plug it into a USB port. But what if your dog's rescuer doesn't happen to be computer savvy?
"If they can't figure it out, there's a phone number right there on the outside, complete with also a serial number that comes with each collar," Warren explained.
For many pet owners, a non-invasive collar is a better alternative to the more common micro chipping.
"Putting something under the skin, I just don't feel real comfortable with it," Gilbert said.
So, does Gilbert wish she had the Micro I.D. the day her four-legged friend got away?
"Oh my gosh, absolutely. If someone could just have taken the information on his collar and put into the computer and known who to call, various alternate numbers, then I wouldn't have been panicked all day. So yeah, I think it'd be great," Gilbert said.
