KENNEDY SPACE CENTER -- A NASA satellite that helps forecasters measure hurricane winds has failed.

Scientists said bearings for an antenna inside the QuikSCAT satellite stopped working earlier this week.

Launched in 1999, the satellite has helped meteorologists measure the exact location of storms and their winds.

Forecasters said the loss of the satellite will not impact forecasts, because of other satellites still in operation and frequent hurricane hunter airplane missions.

No replacement for the QuikSCAT is in the works, officials said.
