Discovery Ready To Roll Out To Launch Pad
Friday, May 02, 2008 7:45:55 PM
CAPE CANAVERAL -- Space shuttle Discovery was scheduled to roll out to the launch pad just after midnight Saturday, as NASA prepared for the May 31 launch.
The veteran shuttle was set for its 35th flight, during which astronauts to install the Japanese Kibo module to the International Space Station.
The research module was Japan's biggest contribution to the space station.
Three, six-and-a-half-hour spacewalks were planned to get the job done.
The 13-day flight was the heaviest to the station. Included are two robotic arms, which would support operations outside the Kibo module.
The mission would also be the first time three robotic arms would be operated during a spaceflight.
Crew members would have more room to move, as the pressurized module on Kibo is about the size of a large tour bus, and will be the largest inhabitable place on the space station.
Discovery was scheduled to begin its three-and-a-half-mile rollout to the launch pad at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
