TITUSVILLE -- The environmental assessment on a NASA site for a possible commercial rocket launch complex was expected to be completed by the summer.
The assessment would help determine whether NASA chooses to build the complex at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The assessment has put the interests that wanted to explore space in conflict with environmentalists on the Space Coast.
Many people were upset, because the wildlife refuge was still frequently used by nature lovers.
U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney told News 13 he wanted the Air Force to make an old rocket launch site available to NASA.
"I'm going to encourage Senator [Bill] Nelson, who we work with on these issues; Senator [Mel] Martinez, who we work with on these issues; [Rep.] Dave Weldon, who unfortunately is retiring, and we are going to find the right person in the Pentagon to sit down with," Feeney said. "Ultimately it may take some presidential leadership.
Feeney talks to News 13's Scott Harris and the Orlando Sentinel's Jane Healy as For The Record heads out to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Catch For The Record Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., only on News 13.
