Wednesday, May 27, 2009 9:23:47 AM
TALLAHASSEE -- It was a high profile sendoff for the troops in Tallahassee heading to Iraq.
Gov. Crist and other dignitaries took part in a ceremony Tuesday in the state capitol courtyard to honor 175 members of the 779th engineer battalion as they prepare to deploy to Iraq.
The 779th is the first major unit in a wave of 4,000 Florida guardsmen that will be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan over the next several months.
The guardsmen will train in Wisconsin for a couple for a couple of weeks before heading to the Middle East.
More than 11,000 of the state's 12,000 guardsmen will remain in the state for the hurricane season.
