THE VILLAGES -- A Sumter County couple, who spearheaded a grassroots effort in a massive retirement community, is set to attend the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20.

Dave Schutte is attending the inauguration after three years of networking and campaigning for Barack Obama.

Schutte was one of three Democratic team leaders covering The Villages.

He said their efforts were able to generate a 35 percent vote for Obama in the election against a community of about 70,000 that's typically a Republican stronghold.

“Just wanted to be a part of what's happening in Washington because I think it's so great for the country and so great for the world," Schutte said.

Schutte went through training in Atlanta 2008 to learn about grassroots organizing to help serve as the Sumter County team leader.
