Obama: Stimulus Plan Will Make Up For Lost Jobs
Sunday, January 11, 2009 1:31:50 PM
WASHINGTON -- In his weekly radio and YouTube address, President-elect Obama said his proposed economic stimulus plan would more than make up for the jobs lost last year.
The U.S. lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008, the worst yearly job loss since 1945.
Obama said he is releasing a report from his economic advisors that projects his nearly $800 billion stimulus package would create about 3.5 million jobs.
The president-elect said his administration would not only create new jobs, but also provide help to people who have lost theirs.
"That means bipartisan extensions of unemployment insurance and healthcare coverage, a $1,000 tax cut for 95 percent of working families, and assistance to help states avoid harmful budget cuts in essential services like police, fire, education and healthcare," Obama said.
Florida lawmakers are looking to Washington for some of that assistance to plug holes in the state budget, especially for heath and human services programs.
