Speaking to the group's 109th annual convention in Orlando Monday, McCain said regardless of their politics, Americans need to stand behind the men and women of our armed forces.
Then, he turned his sights on his opponent, Barack Obama, saying the Illinois Democrat's positions on the Iraq war positions changed as his political ambitions grew.
"With less than three months to go before the election, a lot of people are still trying to square Sen. Obama's varying positions on the surge in Iraq. First, he opposed the surge and confidently predicted that it would fail. Then he tried to prevent funding for the troops who carried out the surge. Not content to merely predict failure in Iraq, my opponent tried to legislate failure," McCain said in his address.
McCain said the lasting advantage of a peaceful and democratic ally in the Middle East could still be squandered by "hasty withdrawal and arbitrary timelines."
After the VFW convention, McCain traveled to the Brevard Community College Planetarium and Observatory and spoke exclusively with News 13's Scott Harris about what he thinks is a top priority for Americans during this election.
