Manatees Huddle Close In Warm Water
Wednesday, January 06, 2010 1:35:57 PM
ORANGE CITY -- Sky 13 caught a group of manatees huddling close to stay warm at Blue Spring State Park Wednesday.
While the air continues to get colder, the water at park stays constant, at 72 degrees -- warmer than the water in the open river.
Manatees must be in water temperatures of at least 68 degrees to survive.
The manatee mania at Blue Spring comes as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute announced they recovered a record 429 manatee carcassess in state waters in 2009.
Officials said the cold temperatures at the beginning of the year could explain in part the record number of deaths.
Biologists documented a record high of 56 deaths related to cold stress in 2009, more than double the five-year average.
In addition, 97 watercraft related deaths and 114 newborn deaths were documented last year by biologists.
