ORLANDO -- News 13 has learned a paint can may have sparked a lockdown and evacuation at a West Orange County elementary school.
Several people said they heard an explosion around 1:30 p.m. Friday behind Bay Meadows Elementary School on South Apopka Vineland Road.
Smoke was spotted about just behind the fence line.
The acting principal decided to put the building on lockdown and then evacuated the school. The students were sent to Southwest Middle School where parents were waiting to pick them up.
Investigators combed through the school and a wooded area around the school.
So far, their preliminary investigation shows the explosion was caused by a paint can or something similar behind the school, but not an explosive device.
