ORLANDO -- Florida state officials Monday said the death penalty should be an option in the case against Casey Anthony.
The state filed a notice with the courts Monday, saying “sufficient aggravating circumstances exist to justify the death penalty.”
Earlier on, the state said it was not in the best interest to pursue that sentence. However, prosecutors said it could still be considered.
Now new information is putting back on the table. This is, of course, if Casey is found guilty of first-degree murder.
“This is not a death penalty case. We will do whatever is necessary to defend Casey Anthony from the state trying to take her life. We already have death-qualified defense lawyers on our team and are prepared for a vigorous defense,” said Marti Mackenzie, spokeswoman for Jose Baez, Casey's attorney.
We expect to hear later this week why they feel this should be a death penalty case.
Meanwhile, Baez wants phone records from her parents, former boyfriends and others.
He wants the court to let him get cell phone records for a dozen witnesses, including his client's parents and former boyfriends, along with the meter reader who found the Caylee's remains.
Orange Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland still has to grant him permission.
The defense wants records, including phone calls, text messages, cell tower pings and Internet usage.
Baez said he can't get this information from investigative documents turned over by prosecutors.
Other people mentioned on the request are private investigators Dominic Casey and Jim Hoover, and Casey Anthony's brother, Lee.
George, Cindy Anthony To Appear On “Oprah”
Casey Anthony's parents are reportedly set to tell their story to Oprah Winfrey.
According to a report by the Orlando Sentinel, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” announced it has scheduled an exclusive interview with George and Cindy Anthony in May.
The show said the Anthonys will talk with Oprah about their granddaughter, Caylee, and the case surrounding her disappearance and death.
No date was given for the show’s airing.
“The Oprah Winfrey Show” airs in Central Florida at 4 p.m. weekdays on ABC, Bright House Digital Cable Channel 7, and HD Channel 1090.
