Fire officials said the fires are under control after burning about 10 to 15 acres, mostly in a wooded area.
Around 50 firefighters responded to the scene around 11 a.m. Sunday. The fire chief said dry and windy conditions intensified the fire.
Firefighters said smoke in the air was very intense at points, making it difficult to see.
Winds up to 35 mph in Brevard County were not helping matters, but crews said no structures were damaged, although several apartments were threatened.
Marcus Curtis said he was making breakfast at his home nearby, when he saw the flames. That was when he said he rushed his family and neighbors out of their homes.
“I looked, turned my head, and it was right across the street,” Curtis told News 13. “That’s when I was like, ‘Time to go,’ woke up everybody and left.”
No homes were damaged. The cause of the fires was not immediately known.
Firefighters said they remain in mop-up mode, and will continue to monitor the scene to make sure there are no flare-ups.
Officials said there were no water lines in the area up until about three years ago. If it had not been for those water lines, it may have been a very different scenario.
Firefighters said they think someone may have caused the fires, but they did not know if it was intentional. Their investigation continues.
