DAYTONA BEACH -- As Thanksgiving gets close, the shelves at a number of local food pantries are not as stocked as they should be.
With four weeks to go before the holiday, the final push is on for a massive food drive in Volusia County.
Officials said they hope to bring in 7,500 pounds of nonperishable food for four separate food banks in the Daytona Beach area.
Florida Hosptial’s Memorial Medical Center and Oceanside campuses have teamed up with the Daytona Beach Fire Department for an eighth year to help collect food donations.
The collections have been going on for a couple of weeks, but this is the last call for help.
Farzad Nourian, a chaplin at Memorial Medical Center, said they have seen the need for the service grow over the years, but the supply has not always been able to keep up with the demand.
“We have seen the need increase, espcially the past year and a half or two years, but there has been a decline over the years,” Nourian said. “Last year, we did have some increase, and this year we had the most increase. We’re very hopeful and grateful for the people who are joining us in this venture.”
How You Can Help
You can drop off your donations at the front lobby of Florida Hopstial Memorial Medical Center:
301 Memorial Medical Parkway, Daytona Beach
» 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday
» 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday
Officials said they will weigh the food Thursday, then sort it out for the four food banks to pick up at the hospital.
