Reported By Heather Sorentrue
SORRENTO -- Investigators say a homeowner shot and killed a suspected burglar on his property early Thursday morning.
It happened at a house on the 25000 block of Springhill Avenue.
Detectives said the homeowner, Shane Beil, woke up to an alarm going off outside around 3:30 a.m.
Beil set up the alarm to monitor his lawn trailer that housed equipment for his business after a rash of thefts in the Sorrento area.
Investigators said Beil's wife called 911 and he went outside armed with a handgun.
Ron Schroeder, one of Beil's neighbors, said he heard three shots fired and ran over to help.
“He felt he was threatened,” Schroeder said. “Didn't know how many other people were around and he was defending himself. He was scared for his life is the impression I got. I don't think he was out there shooting to protect his lawn equipment.”
Investigators said the suspected burglar, Brett Lee Canada, 23, has an extensive history of similar burglaries.
Detectives do not anticipate filing charges against the homeowner, but said they will likely ask the State Attorney's Office to review the case.
