ORLANDO -- A student at the University of Central Florida could be expelled after police said he threatened to kill other students with a bomb.
Corey Carr, 31, was accused of causing a bomb scare that shut down part of the university Tuesday.
Police said the incident started inside Classroom Building One, when Carr grew angry while sitting in class and yelled that he would blow up his classmates.
Students immediately called police, who arrested Carr.
UCF officials said the school takes bomb threats seriously, and they would not be tolerated.
As an example of how seriously UCF took the threat, the school called in the FBI, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and its bomb squad.
“In this day and age, any time somebody makes a statement to other students that they’re going to blow a building up and take lives, we are going to take that serious,” said UCF police Chief Richard Beary. “Point blank, we are going to do it every time.”
The university shut down the entire building and two parking garages.
After clearing the building, officials found Carr’s vehicle, but determined nothing was inside. Police said they would conduct further searches.
Carr was charged with a felony of a bomb threat on state property, and interfering with the educational process, which is a misdemeanor.
It was not immediately clear when Carr would be allowed back on campus, if at all.
In addition to the charges from the state, he will face a separate university disciplinary hearing over the incident.
Carr has bonded out of jail.
