MELBOURNE -- In a solemn ceremony, the casket of a 24-year-old soldier killed in Afghanistan, was removed from an airplane in Melbourne Thursday as his family prepares for his burial in Satellite Beach.

Sgt. Robert Sanchez, 24, of Satellite Beach, died after an explosive device went off while he was fighting enemy forces.

According to family members, the body was taken from the airport by procession to the Beach Funeral Home, located at 1689 S. Patrick Drive, in Indian Harbour Beach.

A public wake was held at the funeral home Thursday.

Robert graduated from Satellite High School in 2004.

Relatives said he had a lot of family in the area, and everyone was just devastated by the loss of the young man.

Sanchez’s funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, at 638 S. Patrick Drive, in Satellite Beach. The funeral is also open to the public.
