CAPE CANAVERAL -- Ever wanted to have your own space shuttle? Now you can -- though it won’t be life-size.
Starting Thursday, nearly two dozen uniquely painted space shuttle statues will hit the auction block for a good cause.
The 22 shuttle statues are 8 feet long. That’s less than 1/10 the size of the real deal, which is 122 feet long.

The statues are part of a community-wide art project called “Shuttles Orbiting the Space Coast.”
The mini-orbiters are decorated in everything from newspaper print to a real quilt. Some have animal themes, while others boast space designs. One bought by a pool company was covered in pool tiles.
The money raised will go to the nonprofit Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
Organizers said the auction is a unique way to help future scientists and engineers.
“We are just wanting to support the very best and brightest, and make sure they are out there,” said Linn LeBlanc, executive director of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
Bidding begins at $500, and the auction runs through Oct. 8.
