SANFORD -- Almost two years after a devastating fire killed 25 cats and seven dogs at a Seminole County animal shelter, officials tell News 13 workers are ready to see it rise from the ashes.
When News 13 visited Animal Control in February 2008 on the first anniversary of the fire, workers agreed there were no visible signs of progress to rebuild.
But as they approach the two year mark, progress can be seen.
"We're ecstatic at this point. We've got walls all the way around. We've got a roof, and today we got tar paper, so that means we're getting dried in. And they'll start finishing off the inside, which means we're closer to moving in," said Mary Beth Lake from Seminole County Animal Control.
The fire reduced space so much that small dogs had to be kept in a cramped room with a washer and dryer.
The new facility is 1,000 square feet larger, and provides more space to keep cats and dogs.
The building is projected to be complete by early March. However, workers are hoping to move in by the end of February.
