8 Hurt In Federal Prison Brawl
Sunday, January 25, 2009 11:45:40 PM
COLEMAN -- Eight inmates were hurt in a stabbing incident at Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County.
An official with the Department of Bureau of Prison said there was a large scale fight at the USP Coleman II Federal Prison on the recreation yard. The initial call came in around 2:45 p.m. Sunday as a stabbing.
Helicopters were called out to fly inmates to various hospitals in Central Florida, including Orlando Regional Medical Center. Two other patients were taken by ambulance.
Staff members were not seriously injured. The institution is secure.
Last October, four stabbings were reported at the Sumter County prison.
The prison has four facilities that house low, medium and high security inmates. The correctional complex is actively hiring. The Federal Bureau of Prisons Web site says Coleman "is in urgent need of correctional officers to fill vacant positions."
