Get Ready For Cold Weather
Tuesday, January 13, 2009 11:34:11 PM
ORLANDO -- State officials are telling Florida residents to prepare for some of the coldest weather of the season this week.
Rain Tuesday is set to bring some of the coldest temperatures seen in Central Florida in a while.
State officials issued a statement urging all Floridians to stay inside when the temperature flirts with freezing this week.
Emergency workers said they want people to use safe sources for heating, and to keep things like space heaters and candles away from curtains and furniture.
Charcoal and other fuel-burning devices that produce carbon monoxide should never be used indoors.
Emergency workers also recommended people install carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.
Cold Snap Has Fern Growers Worried
There'll be a few sleepless fern growers in Pierson the next few days because temperatures are expected to drop down to levels that can be devastating to the delicate leaf used to decorate floral arrangements.
Fern pickers are working seven days a week to try and pick as much of the leaf before the cold snap, and rescue as many as they can for the Valentine holiday season, which is the biggest money maker for fern growers.
The mercury could drop into the 30s in that part of Volusia County on Wednesday and Thursday.
"It wipes whatever you can sell during these holidays out, so you'd be in serious trouble if you lost a crop," said Frank Jones.
Florists News 13 spoke with said less crop means higher prices for floral arrangements, and the cost could be passed on to us.
