ORLANDO -- The speed limit has changed along a stretch of Interstate 4, from Maitland Boulevard to Orange Blossom Trail.
Electronic, variable speed limit signs were turned on Monday morning, replacing older electronic signs that have not worked properly for years.
Traffic officials said they will be monitoring the signs and changing the speed limit based on road conditions, in an effort to keep traffic moving.
"If you slow down, you will maintain a continuous flow of traffic, and you will actually get from Point A to Point B quicker and safer," said Steve Homan, director of public information with the Florida Department of Transportation.
The Florida Highway Patrol said they will not increase their patrols, but will be monitoring the areas with the variable speed limits.
Traffic officials said speed limits will range from 30 to 55 mph.
