BREVARD COUNTY -- Cats are getting spayed and neutered by the dozen in Brevard County.
It's an attempt to save their lives.
A Space Coast group, pushing Brevard Animal Services to make its shelters no-kill, said this is the first step.
The stray cats were rounded up, sedated, and operated on. Then they were marked, so volunteers know what cats seen in the county have already been fixed.
People working with the group said this will lower the cat population, lowering the number ending up in shelters, and eventually preventing others from being put to sleep.
One volunteer said she got involved in the program when she found rats in her house.
"We had rats, and the mother of a female cat came along, and low and behold we got rid of the rats, but the cats began to multiply. They were neutered spayed and the last kitten I had born on my property was in 2001," said one volunteer.
The group said it has performed about 500 operations in the past year.
This fall, volunteers will take their no-kill proposal to the county.
